High House Cottage
High House holiday cottage offers stylish self-catering accommodation for up to 6 people. The house is stunning throughout with attention to detail that makes this house a cut above the rest.
The views from the house are spectacular towards Irton Church and then to the mountains beyond. From the house you can walk to the church which has an ancient cross erected in the 9th Century. Look out for the plaque by the font dedicated to the memory of RW Skeffington Lutwidge, commissioner in lunacy who died from a blow to the head adminstered by a lunatic in Salisbury. Situated just outside Holmrook village and with easy access to the A595, High House is superbly located to explore the Western Lake District fells and coastline. Wasdale with Wastwater Lake is just 4 miles away (10 minutes by car) and is a fantastic place to be when the stars are out on a clear night. Wasdale is a good place to tackle Scafell, England's highest mountain. High House is in beautiful order throughout with doors leading to the gardens from the kitchen, sitting room and dining room. The main door, however, leads to a spacious hallway and the reception rooms can be accessed from hereThe kitchen is large and has dining for six people, plus a comfy sofa making this a real living kitchen. It is fully equipped with gas range with electric oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and plenty of storage space. There is a washing machine and tumble drier in a separate utility room.
The sitting room is spacious with TV, DVD player, woodburning stove & CD player. The stone stairways are over three hundred years old and worn down by many generations - they lead to the first floor which has two double bedrooms and two bathrooms (one of which is ensuite with bath and shower, the other is for guests using the second bedroom and has a shower). At the top of the house is the attic suite with retreat room to take advantage of the stunning views, top double bedroom also with views and shower-room with WC (please take note of low ceilings and low beams).Throughout the house, fine attention has been made to detail, creating a house that is beautiful throughout.Outside the garden covers all sides of the house with a paddock area to the South, decking area (with garden furniture) by the kitchen and lots of nooks and crannies elsewhere. There is also a gin & tonic deck (please note that there is steep drop from here making it unsuitable for small children).
There are several acres of woodland that you are welcome to explore. Please note, however, that these woodlands are private and as such do not have set paths. The woods lead down to the river which can be lovely to swim in.
